TrafficSense - Road Traffic Data Collection
Description:
TrafficSense connects to the switching centers of the cellular network and incorporates anonymous signaling data to provide highly accurate traffic information for all highway, arterials and surface streets. The main deliveries of TrafficSense are:
-
Immediate incident alert - similar to road sensors
-
Highly accurate travel time
-
High-resolution local speed - similar to road sensors
Performance:
TrafficSense was successfully benchmarked against road sensors and FCD (Floating Car Data) test drivesby several Department of Transportations with the following results:
Average latency of Slowdown Detection of a couple of minutes in comparison with road sensors
Less than 10% average error in measuring Travel Times in comparison with floating test vehicle
Average Local Speed error over small road segments (250 meters in urban areas) is less than 6 kph in comparison with road sensors
How it works:
TrafficSense' data collection is based on Cellint’s patented Virtual Sensor technology.
-
The system traces each specific anonymous vehicle, and by using a sequence of cellular messages the mobile phone provides, TrafficSense correlates it to the exact location it is traveling on. TrafficSense cannot distinguish between different lanes of the same road, but has the ability to distinguish between parallel, close-by roads and lanes which are separated by a ramp.
-
Once a vehicle is correlated to a road, the system can measure the position of the vehicle accurately, similar to a virtual sensor every 250 meters (in urban areas) along the road, while tracing the same vehicle as it passes every virtual sensor.
-
Every few location points provide an accurate travel time sample for that road section. The system collects all the samples to continuously create a full traffic data picture for the monitored road.
-
A special algorithm is used to derive incident alerts from that data

Other Potential Contribution of TrafficSense:
Gathering traffic data from TrafficSense can be used for several other purposes:
-
Historical database and origin destination statistics for road planning.
-
Total delays analysis per road section and for the entire road network. This is used by transportation agencies as a tool to evaluate their performance and measure improvements.
System Interface:
TrafficSense provides several Customer Interface options, including:
-
Interface to Traffic Control Center (TCC) using standard communication protocols, such as XML. Data format can be at TMDD.
-
Direct connection to Cellint’s Customer Interface client application
-
TrafficSense’s online distribution platform, which enables multi-customer access to information via internet.
