CitySense monitors movements and behavior patterns of inhabitants and visitors in all transportation modes and provides state of the art data and tools to best manage and optimize city services and safety, enabling municipalities and governments to best develop their territories and achieve their economic and cultural goals. CitySense generates its data by connecting to the main switching centers of the mobile network and tracking all active phones in real time, anonymously and passively, to the exact street they are traveling on, pin-pointing their exact location in short intervals.

How it works:

CitySense generates its superior accuracy by taking the huge amount of data points generated by the cellular network, and assigning GPS coordinates each data point in real time. In order to achieve that level of accuracy the system match the live signaling data from the network with maps the cellular signaling patterns in the city, which acts as a reference location database (instead of the cellular tower location). The mapping process includes recording physical journeys over the roads, railways and paths, in which each cellular signaling message is recorded with a GPS location reference. ➔

Once this location reference database is ready, the system will use it as follows: The system tracks each specific anonymous phone, and by using a sequence of cellular messages the mobile phone generates, CitySense correlates it to the exact route it is traveling on. CitySense has the ability to distinguish between parallel, close-by roads and lanes which are separated by some type of terrain.
Once a phone is correlated to a path, the system can measure the position of the phone accurately, similar to a virtual sensor every 250 meters on average along the route (in urban areas), while tracking the same vehicle as it passes every virtual sensor ➔

Every couple of location points providesan accurate travel time sample for that section. The system collects all the samples to continuously create a full traffic data picture for the monitored road. A special algorithm is used to derive slowdown alerts from that flow data. Further analysis is conducted to determine where each phone owner lives, works, travel, how and why. Data is provided for all neighborhoods, industry zones and recreational facilities at street level resolution. The data quality was validated by many municipalities, government agencies and market leaders to match sensors data quality.

By using our Origin Destination data, the survey can identify where people live, work, visit, why and how they travel, etc. The cellular network data has excellent representation of all population segments, including population that is not covered by regular surveys like visitors, immigrants and students. This method also overcomes the shortage of the old method, in which decreasing number of people have land lines which makes them adequate for a phone survey. The data can be matched with government census data of their home neighborhood in order to deduct demographic parameters of the monitored population, such as age, level of income, etc.
